Dean of Curriculum and Instruction

The Opportunity

At Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA), our Dean of Curriculum and Instruction will serve as a specialist to assist in the development and implementation of campus instructional plans that align with district goals and curriculum. The Dean will work with teachers and campus administration to analyze student data, diagnose instructional needs, and identify research-based instructional strategies to close achievement gaps.

They will also build trust and community in the classroom via clear and timely communication with faculty and administration. Our Dean works directly with campus administration to design and provide professional development focused on improving alignment and delivery of the written, taught, and tested curriculum to increase student success and close performance gaps.

The Details
Key Deliverables:

• Ensures the execution of the PLA Academic Model is taking place in the school and holds staff accountable for the execution of the model
• Support teachers and interventionists with lesson planning and pacing 
• Model small group and whole group lessons as needed
• Ensure data collection of weekly and interim assessments leads to appropriate small-group instruction
• Ensure teachers stay on track with the pacing guides
• Ensure all scholars take PLA common formative assessment
• Support and provide program training as needed
• Develops positive and supportive relationships with classroom teachers, administrators, and staff across partner schools
• Additional responsibilities as assigned

LOCATION: Jalen Rose Leadership Academy in Detroit, MI 

Experience and Education Requirements:

• A passion for working with students and families in under-served communities 
• Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university; Master’s Degree, preferred
• Valid State Teacher License
• High proficiency in grade-level standards, benchmarks, and curriculum 
• Experience tracking and using data to drive instruction
• Demonstrates organizational and time management skills
• Attend Admin meetings and other partnership meetings as assigned
• Support the overall school structure where needed (hallways, lunchroom, arrivals, departures, etc.)
• Additional responsibilities as assigned

Campus Overview:

Jalen Rose Leadership Academy (JRLA) is an open enrollment, tuition-free public charter high school on the northwest side of Detroit. The Academy began its first academic year in September 2011 and currently serves over 400 ninth through twelfth-grade scholars as well as nearly 800 alumni from metro Detroit. JRLA provides a leadership-focused education that engages and inspires youth to achieve at the rigorous level necessary to ultimately graduate with a college degree. Scholars are provided with an authentic academic experience that builds both the skill and will necessary to be successful in high school and beyond. 

 Immersed in the culture of college, scholars will receive extensive college exposure via university tours and summer program experiences to assist in a seamless transition into college. 

JRLA is a 9-16 model where scholars are supported not only through high school graduation, but through college graduation via our College Success team that works to coordinate success for current scholars and alumni.
